Eskom opened a strategic-partner qualification process for up to 6 GW of renewable-energy and storage projects, according to its original release dated 9 October 2026. The announcement describes procurement ambitions and proposed structures, not independently corroborated investment commitments or completed generating capacity. The Phase 1 programme covers solar photovoltaic generation, battery storage, wind and other renewable technologies. Eskom said its own contribution would include at least 2 GW of solar PV and 1 GW/4 GWh of battery storage, potentially supplemented by projects owned or originated by selected partners. Those figures describe the proposed portfolio rather than capacity already delivered through the process. The qualification stage is intended to establish a five-year panel of co-development and co-investment partners. Panel members may be invited into later project-specific procurement, with funding arrangements and structures decided individually. Applicants must demonstrate development experience, financial capacity and the ability to construct, operate and maintain utility-scale projects. Eskom described opportunities on its land and generation sites, as well as possible partnerships around externally originated projects. Its contributed projects have allocated sites, but land arrangements, environmental authorisations and grid access were described as progressing at differing levels of maturity. Individual projects were expected to use ring-fenced special-purpose vehicles and predominantly limited- or non-recourse project finance, subject to evaluations and governance approvals. The release also stated that Eskom Green was still being incorporated. Eskom Holdings would administer procurement in the meantime and would own all of the new business’s shares once incorporation was completed. Nexus analysis A partner panel can organise access to private capital and development expertise, but qualification is not a project award. The important distinction is between a portfolio ceiling, Eskom’s proposed contribution and projects that eventually obtain approvals, contracts and financing. The saved announcement establishes the procurement framework; it does not establish that the full 6 GW will be built or when electricity will become available.
