Benin’s Glo-Djigbé Industrial Zone is preparing a combination of thermal and solar generation to support its factories, according to statements reported by La Nouvelle Tribune on 21 October. SIPI-Bénin chief executive Létondji Beheton described the plans at a press conference held during the special economic zones investment forum. The announcement concerns proposed capacity, not electricity already available to industrial customers. The thermal component would exceed 225 megawatts. Beheton said a 30-kilometre pipeline linking the industrial zone to Maria-Gléta had just been completed. That connection is intended to carry gas directly to the zone for power generation. He described the thermal project as sufficiently advanced for deployment in the coming months, but the report does not establish that the plant has entered commercial service. The solar programme comprises projects totalling 300 MW. Construction of the first plant is expected to start within the next 18 months. The stated purpose is to cover part of the zone’s electricity requirements and supply the national network when generation exceeds local consumption. A separate rooftop programme on warehouses and other industrial buildings could add approximately 100 MW. These components explain the reported ambition of more than 625 MW. They should not be presented as a single completed power station or as a verified construction contract. The source does not identify committed financing, contractors or a final commissioning schedule for the entire programme. Nexus analysis — The practical significance is the attempt to connect industrial expansion with dedicated energy infrastructure. However, an announced capacity portfolio is different from dependable delivered electricity. Subsequent reporting should distinguish pipeline completion, power-plant construction, financing commitments and operational commissioning rather than treating them as one milestone.
