The Indian Ocean regional research platform PRéRAD-OI launched a sixth thematic area dedicated to Biomass-Energy during its Regional Strategic and Technical Orientation Committee meeting in Mauritius on 8–11 September 2026. CIRAD’s BioWooEB research unit reported the development on 22 September and will coordinate the new theme. PRéRAD-OI brings together 25 institutions and more than 50 partners working on agricultural, food and environmental challenges. The meeting represented Madagascar, Mauritius and Rodrigues, Seychelles, Comoros, and France through Réunion and Mayotte. The announcement describes a regional research collaboration rather than the creation of a new electricity utility or generation asset. The biomass theme is intended to strengthen exchanges and cooperation on biomass valorisation, bioenergy and circular-economy approaches. Its launch accompanied the signing of an amendment to the platform’s framework agreement between CIRAD and the Indian Ocean Commission, paving the way for renewal and continuation of the wider partnership. A technical field visit linked biomass, agriculture and energy. Participants visited Nature Technics, whose activities include biochar and vermicompost production, and Beau Vallon Agro-Business Group, which works on biomass-energy production and valorisation. These visits illustrated existing areas of practice; the source does not announce new capacity at either organisation. No dedicated budget, installed power target, procurement timetable or commercial commissioning date is provided for the new thematic area. The available original report is brief and supports a collaboration milestone, not a detailed investment assessment. Nexus analysis: A research coordination mechanism may help partners compare feedstock uses and share technical experience, but the announcement does not demonstrate commercial deployment or quantified energy output. The next evidence needed is a defined work programme, funded research activities and documented results. No power-project economics can be inferred from this launch.
