Hyphen Hydrogen Energy said on 22 September 2026 that the African Development Bank had selected it for a prospective US$5.93 million reimbursable grant under the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa’s Africa Green Hydrogen Programme. The support is intended for project development up to final investment decision, not construction finance or a completed investment decision. The selection builds on a previously announced US$10 million reimbursable grant, disclosed on 9 December 2025. Hyphen says it was one of four projects chosen through a call receiving 81 submissions from 18 African countries, and that its allocation was the largest among the selected initiatives. The company’s release supports this Namibia-specific selection, rather than independently establishing the financing position of every project in the regional programme. Hyphen is a Namibian-registered joint venture between ENERTRAG SE and Nicholas Holdings Limited. Namibia’s government holds a 24% shareholding through its blended-finance company SDG Namibia One. The developer obtained rights through a public tender for a large-scale hydrogen project on government-owned land, as an initial step in the country’s strategy for a domestic green-hydrogen industry. At full development, the project targets about 7 GW of renewable generation, 3 GW of electrolyser capacity and two million tonnes of green ammonia annually for regional and global markets, including sustainable shipping and aviation fuels. Final investment decision for a first phase producing one million tonnes annually is targeted by the end of 2027. Hyphen projects up to 15,000 construction jobs and potentially 3,000 permanent operating jobs after both phases, with 90% targeted for Namibians and 20% reserved for local youth. Nexus analysis: This is reimbursable preparation support for a renewables-based industrial project. The ownership structure and first-phase timetable clarify who is developing it and the decision still ahead; projected capacity and employment remain development targets.
