Fortescue’s Bélinga iron ore project in Gabon remains under development more than three years after its February 2023 mining permit. The company’s August 2026 report recorded more than 230,000 metres of drilling, with technical studies and government approvals still being pursued. In 2025, Fortescue had expected the feasibility study to be completed by December 2026. Its latest report provides no updated completion timetable. Available project information identifies 2030 as a possible target for commissioning an integrated mine, railway and port operation and making a first commercial shipment, not a confirmed start date. The permit has an initial 20-year term, and the original mining agreement envisaged initial production of two million tonnes annually. Those figures describe authorized tenure and planned output, rather than current production. Bélinga could broaden Gabon’s extractive economy, alongside Genmin’s Baniaka project. However, transport infrastructure, outstanding approvals and market conditions remain important: iron ore was around $90.86 per tonne on October 21, down 13% year on year, according to Trading Economics figures cited in the report. The deposit was discovered in 1955, illustrating the long history behind the current development effort. Ecofin compares the infrastructure challenge with Guinea's Simandou, while noting that Bélinga's planned output is smaller. That comparison does not establish equivalent costs or a matching construction timetable. Gabon's interest is diversification beyond an extractive economy dominated by hydrocarbons, but neither a permit nor extensive drilling resolves the economics of an integrated transport system. The report does not provide a completed feasibility assessment or a final investment decision. Nexus analysis: The missing updated study deadline is a disclosure gap, not evidence that a new completion date has been agreed or that the earlier December 2026 expectation has necessarily been missed.
