Burkina Faso inaugurated the RAFFINOR-BF gold refinery in Ouagadougou on September 28, 2026, according to the refinery’s own account. President Ibrahim Traoré presided over the ceremony at the five-hectare site in Ouaga 2000. The complex includes a foundry, an analysis laboratory, secure storage, a jewellery unit and administrative premises. The operator says its automated, closed-loop equipment can produce gold with a purity of 99.99%. It presents the facility as a means of refining, analysing and certifying both industrial and artisanal gold domestically. RAFFINOR-BF reports initial annual refining capacity of 164 tonnes and says its modular design could allow expansion to 515 tonnes. These are operator-stated capacities, not evidence of achieved annual output. The company puts investment at more than 11 billion CFA francs and projects 100 direct jobs and more than 5,000 indirect jobs. The employment figures remain expectations in the announcement; it provides no audited operating results or verified employment totals. The operator describes the inauguration as a change in where the country’s gold can be processed: its account explicitly covers analysis and certification as well as refining. The on-site laboratory and secure storage therefore sit alongside the melting and purification facilities, while the jewellery unit adds a further downstream activity. The company also says the closed-loop equipment is intended to limit environmental impacts, without publishing quantified performance measurements in the release. Nexus analysis: The announcement establishes a domestic processing proposition, but the distinction between capacity and throughput is essential. The potential modular expansion is not presented as completed additional capacity, and the release does not establish how much industrial or artisanal feedstock has actually reached the refinery.
