From molecules to metal: can Mozambique convert gas into industry?

Mozambique's strategic question is not whether it can export LNG, but whether any of those molecules become domestic industrial capacity.

Two liquefaction developments define Mozambique's export profile: the operating Coral South FLNG in Area 4 and the onshore Area 1 complex at Afungi. Both are structured around export markets.

The industrial counterweight already exists. Mozal converts imported alumina into primary aluminium and is the country's largest industrial exporter — but it runs on electricity, and its long-term supply arrangements are the single most consequential industrial policy variable in the country.

The connecting asset is power. Cahora Bassa is operating; Mphanda Nkuwa is not yet built. Any credible gas-to-industry thesis therefore runs through generation and transmission decisions rather than through the LNG trains themselves.
